RECOMMENDED BOOKS TO READ

Here are some books that I recommend reading to learn more about the colonization of British Malaya.

This book was first published in 1907 Sir Frank Swettenham, who was the late Governor of the Strait Settlements and High Commissioner of the Federated States. This book details the specifics of the first British residents of Malaya and the technicalities behind the history of the Malayan region as it was conquered by the British.

Publisher: John Lane The Bodley Head, 1907.

Written by Christopher Hale who is a former BBC producer of several historical documentaries, the book delves into several tactics that the British used in order to gain control of the Malayan region. These tactics are shown to be brutal, oppressive, and ultimately shocking to the readers who may have come in with other perspectives of the colonizers in the mind.

Publisher: The History Press, 2013.

ISBN: 9780752487014

In this book, Shennan provides a decent overview of the history of Malaya through memoirs, journal entries, and anecdotes told from those of the past. Stories from tin and rubber plantation farmers are presented to the readers, with an additional telling of the history of how the British took over the native Malayans that once lived in peace, and how everything has changed since then.

Publisher: Monsoon Books, 2000.

ISBN: 9789814625319

This book, recently released in 2019, also provides similar anecdotes and stories of farmers and ordinary people living under the British colonial rule. Oral interviews, court files, and administrative files are provided in this ode to the British rule.

Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 2019.
